On Tuesday February15, 2022, the Arua Resident Judge, Hon. Justice Isah Serunkuma, HW Catherine Agwero (Deputy Registrar) and HW George Obong (Chief Magistrate) engaged stakeholders at Yumbe and Koboko Chief Magistrates courts.
The team also inspected the construction site for Maracha Court premises, Yumbe and Koboko Chief Magistrates Court.
The Resident Judge went on to hold meetings with different stakeholders including; the Resident District Commissioner, LC V Chairperson as well as representatives of different justice institutions.
During these meetings, the Resident Judge appreciated the stakeholders for allocating land to the Judiciary for the construction of the Maracha Magistrate's Court and actively monitoring to ensure quality works.
He urged the judicial officers to fight corruption in all its forms.
The Resident Judge noted that the Judiciary Strategic Plan V emphasizes physical access to justice. He added that the Judiciary as an institution is committed to ensure that it clears case backlog by increasing the number of Staff of the Judiciary and the courts so as to expedite the processes of administering justice.
While at Yumbe court, officials from the International Rescue Commission (IRC), commended the Judiciary for holding mobile courts in refugee settlements. This, they said, had greatly improved access to Justice.
The Yumbe district officials expressed their commitment to offer land for the construction of a Regional Court of Appeal if Arua City fails to do so.
The most outstanding challenge during the inspections was the pathetic state of Yumbe court which lacks functional toilets/latrines.
